The Press and Information Office (PIO) has been tasked by the Government to undertake the editing, design and production of all government publications, including those issued by the various Ministries. The total volume comes to 450-500 items annually, with much of the work being done in-house and the rest outsourced to the private sector. Some of the printing is done by the Government Printing Office, but the bulk of it is awarded to private sector businesses through competitive bids, with the PIO supervising the entire process.
The Press and Information Office publications in particular, which aim to inform the public both in Cyprus and abroad about Cyprus in general, and issues pertaining to the Cyprus Problem in particular, are primarily prepared by PIO staff or in cooperation with other organisations. They include print productions, such as books, booklets, leaflets and periodicals, as well as electronic publications and many are available in several languages.
